JASMINE

Troy spied me as I entered his bedroom. “Why are you walking like that, Jazz?”

“Like what?” I took my time sitting down. My behind was already injured and couldn’t take any more pressure.

Troy slid over, probably to give me more room. On his laptop Dawn and a strange woman talked. He paused the video playing on the computer in front of him. “Jazz, you’re walking like a fox crawled inside of you and ripped your insides apart and you’re just healing from the damage.”

“That’s ridiculous. I’m walking normal.” I did my best to not sit on my bottom. Instead, I sort of balanced on one thigh and leaned against the wall.

“You should stop having rough sex.”

“Eww. I’m not having a discussion with you of all people on sex.”

“Not that what I heard was even sex.”

“No one told you to listen.”

He bunched his face up into a horrific expression. “Trust me. I was doing my best not to listen as that white boy beat it up.”

“You’re disgusting.”

“No, you’re the one and you’re mad that I’m right.”

“Yeah. Yeah. Chase is on probation. We didn’t have sex.”

“Well, then he’s cheating because he sure had someone upstairs screaming out biblical names for the past two hours.”

Saying nothing, I formed my lips into an angry line.

“Oh, Chase! Help me, Jesus!” Troy screamed in a light voice. “Let the heavens open up! God take me now!”

“No one said all of that.”

“Might as well. You sure screamed out ‘Oh, God,’ enough.”

“I hate you.”

“Naw. You just hate the truth.”

“Topic change, please.” I gestured to the computer. “What have you got so far?”

He glanced over his shoulder. “None of your business.”

“Which means you have nothing.”

An exasperated breath left his lips. “These rich chicks just whine, complain, drink, follow Chase around, and then do it all over again the next day. It’s just videos and videos of this stuff. I’m surprised one of them didn’t start killing sooner. I already want to murder all three of them. Listen to this.” He pressed a button. On the laptop screen, the volume rose.

Dawn’s face appeared as she pointed at an exotic brunette draped in designer clothes and huge diamonds. “I found cocaine in your dresser drawer. Explain yourself.”

The brunette opened her mouth in shock. “What are you doing searching my bedroom? How do you even have a key? I’m telling Chase.”

“You say something and your funds just might be lower next month.”

“You can’t do that.”

“Poor, Evelyn. If you were sober long enough, you would understand that not only can I slash away at your monthly allowance, but Chase will authorize it.”

The woman whom I now knew as Evelyn backed up. “D-dawn, that coke wasn’t even mine.”

“No? Whose was it?”

“A friend’s.”

“Then no more friends coming to visit. I don’t like that type of people on my property.”

Whoa. You’re really feeling yourself there. Can we say power fucking trip?

“Um. . .I can’t have friends come over, ever?” Evelyn tucked her hair behind her ears. The diamond bracelet on her wrist clinked against itself. “But I get lonely.
